The Phillies have taken on an air of desperation and it's resulted in some bizarre choices on the field.
On Monday, that choice was made by Chase Utley in the first inning against San Francisco Giants lefty Barry Zito.
After both Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino singled, Utley attempted to bunt with Ryan Howard on deck. Utley's rationale was simple but misguided.
"I was trying to make something happen," said Utley, who has hit .278 against lefties this year. "You don't know how many times you're going to have an opportunity to score off him. We didn't get the job done.
"It was a curve ball that I tried to put in play. Worse case scenario, you got two guys in scoring position with the middle of your lineup up."
Phils manager Charlie Manuel confirmed Utley did this on his own after the game, and of further concern is Utley has to understand that he's a part of the middle of the lineup.
The bunt attempt did move both runners up a base as Utley was thrown out. But, Zito intentionally walked Howard before getting the final two outs of the inning on a fly out and fielder's choice.
The importance of Shea: The Phillies travel to New York for a three-game series against the National League East leading Mets but starter Jamie Moyer isn't focused on just beating the Mets. He sees a team wallowing in inconsistency and can't worry about opponents as much as righting this ship.
"We have to hit better and pitch better, if we expect to do anything," Moyer said. "It just becomes consistency.
"They're all big series. Not to take anything away from this series but we can't catch the Mets until we catch the Braves. We have to play good baseball regardless of whom we play. We have to play well in New York and well in Kansas City and then well when we come home."
From the Pen: Brett Myers didn't throw again on Monday and it now appears he won't be coming off the disabled list when he's eligible on Friday. . . . Jimmy Rollins had his 23rd multi-hit game of the season and his third with three or more hits.
